“The Powell Girls” are a talented sister duo from the San Francisco Bay Area. Rebecca has been a craftsperson ever since she discovered sewing at the age of 10. That love led her to try needle arts, as well as fashion design. Early on she also developed a love of all things old, spurred by a trip with her best friend to wonderful antique stores in 1968 to Victoria, Canada. After filling her home with treasures, she realized if she wanted to keep going to antique fairs, it was time to stop collecting and start making! About three years ago at a flea market, she inexplicably found herself drawn to a collection of metal lamp parts—which she envisioned as candle holders. Shortly thereafter, “Le Becque” was born. The collection of candle holders designed from reclaimed lamp parts dating from as early as the mid 1800’s through to the 1960’s, continues to grow in its designs, shapes, and sizes. The candleholders incorporate a mix of old crystals, chandelier parts, pieces of floor lamps, vintage glass and painted metal pieces—and are by definition all one-of-a kind.
Tracy, “the other Powell girl,” always had a pencil in her hand growing up, and no phone book or scrap of paper was safe from her drawings. In the early 1980’s, Tracy took this talent and created her own line of hand made creating cards, as well as became a designer for Marcel Schurman, Colors by Design and Hallmark. After children arrived, she spent several years teaching art, but eventually joined the nonprofit world. Seeing the wonderful creative fun her sister Rebecca was having, Tracy began designing a jewelry collection that incorporates semi precious stones. She also started making art again, incorporating her love for Paris with clay and collage.
Once both sisters were creating, they searched for a name. They both cherish a childhood photo and knowing that their father would be so proud, “The Powell Girls” became official. In addition to the candleholders, jewelry and art, The Powell Girls decided to use Rebecca’s love of found objects and each have created an additional jewelry line incorporating precious keys, hinges, key plates, and doorplates. The Powell Girls are excited to share their love of Paris, antiques, jewelry and art with you.
